God’s Grace Surmounts Human Pride
God’s Grace Surmounts Human Pride
Topic: Pride
Hubris or excessive pride is a part of human existence. It is a frequent culprit in our fall from grace. The stories we read this morning remind us that it is not the creature — the human beings — but the Creator who determines the end toward which the cycles of life move. In this life the innocent will always be destroyed by the lust for power and revenge. Human life is marked by pride, jealousy, cruelty and death. This is the landscape in which we live. We must be forced to see the paradoxes that exist in human-built societies; to acknowledge them with humbleness, to atone and return to God’s grace. We must gaze at the unsavory smells of the death that we — human cultures — bring about.
